Dear Nigerian Youth and aspiring entrepreneurs,
As the world go global, the need for information and communication technology has become a daily necessity as more and more people are now getting connected to the Internet. This phenomenon is giving a few people who know the secret of rendering quality technical service in the area to go all the way to the ATM points smiling with their pocket filled with cash.
Internet access and Internet browsing using Nokia phones as access came into operation as advancement in phone technology and Internet compatibility took a new turn some few years ago. Re-engineering your phone to be an Internet device for your computer system is one of the greatest access for Internet browser, because of the far reaching effect of the GSM network and easy logistic of the operation.
This method of browsing the net is becoming more popular with those who desire to use the Internet to enhance their business communication and transaction. A lot of them know how convenient it is to be using their phone as modem for browsing the Internet anywhere in Nigeria where there is a GSM network. In fact, any network you desire, since all the GSM network in the country are Internet compliant. In this system of GSM Engineering, your phone will serve as a modem.
That is not where the story ends, it is not all phones that can do this job, there are some specific phones that you need to use.
That is not where the story ends, it is not all phones that can do this job, there are some specific phones that you need to use.
Examples of such phones in use presently is Nokia 6230 and Nokia 3110C, which means this phone is not only for you to receive calls, make calls and, collect mp3 and videos, it can be used to synchronize your messages, i.e. transferring your messages from your phone to your systems. Perhaps you may want to have a back up for your messages with this phone. It can be done by simply using the phone data cable.
What these phones can do
The advantages of this phone are in the different things it has the capacity to do. At least we can mention as much as six different things we can use Nokia 3110C or 6230 for.
We also have the Nokia 6230i, that one is an advanced form of 6230. Both phones are good instrument for using the Internet. Let me just mention few of those things the phone can do:

- It can serves as back up for your message on your phone
- It can serve as back up for your contact on your phone to your computer system or laptop
- Synchronizing everything on your phone to your laptop or Computer system
- It serves as an Internet facility on your laptop or Computer system.
These are the few we can mention out of the whole lot. We can use this for mp3, movies, and sending MMS, Multimedia service or multimedia messaging service messages through to international and local lines. It sends it like an email, pictures to somebody in U.K, Canada. It makes you send messages to international lines free of charge without paying a kobo by using MMS. And it is operational as far as your line has been activated with MMS.
Text Messaging through the Internet Using this phone, depending on the operator and the expert that installed it for you, you can have access to a lot of sites that cannot be opened by ordinary browsing. The phone work with it on the basis of the expertise.
Text Messaging through the Internet Using this phone, depending on the operator and the expert that installed it for you, you can have access to a lot of sites that cannot be opened by ordinary browsing. The phone work with it on the basis of the expertise.
How Does It Work
It works so beautifully and fast because your phone has a facility of 460kbs speed to browse the Internet. What this means is that the phone has a speed of 460kbs (kilobyte per second). For instance, if you are loading a page and you know a page is about 4 megabyte or 5 megabyte and the modem facility is about 460kbs of speed that means that in the next 2 minutes, it can download at least a page of 10 to 50 megabyte. Some people don't know the relationship between kilobyte, megabyte etc and browsing speed.
Even in cafés, they give you 10gigs because they are not using NigCom SAT. They are using international satellite like Visat. So, they are using Megabyte in Canada and U.S but as far as Nigeria is concerned, we have not seen any Internet that uses higher than that of 460kbs. They are just giving you modern stock with 3G. Some of the fixed wirelesses are under 460 kbps Desktop and Laptop in terms of Internet access.
The way it work on your laptop is equally the same way it work on your desktop. What you need is that if your desktop has a USB port that can connect the cable to your phones plugging port. The port is the most important thing. For a system that has Internet access to be able to relate with the phone which is a modem they need to have USB port, that is all they need.
Data Connectivity analysis
The data cable (DKE-2, DKU-2, CA-70 or CA-42) help to transfer data from your phone to your laptop or desktop system. The cable transfer data from your phone to your computer and turns it into information for you to use. Once the configuration is done on this phone, it can have access to browse the Internet with laptop or desktop.
How to do your connectivity
Now, first of all, your computer or your desktop must be Internet ready; must have Firefox or Internet explorer, or any other means for it to work and browse with the phone connection.
You need a PC Suite of the phone because we have different makes or brands of phone. For instance, we have Sony Ericson, Motorola, Samsung and we have the Nokia. PC suite is a software that connects the phone to the computer. Despite the cable connecting them, there must be a software that you have to load to be able to see the phone. When you plug it in, your external drive will request for a software. You can call it a driver, that is what the computer people call it, but in phones we call it the suite (PC suite), that is the processing compact suite. So once you have a PC suite installed in the computer then the phone can have access to the computer directly and have access to the Internet and browsing can start.
What to do to start browsing
The things you need is just to get: your line, or SIM card of the network of your choice and you need to have a special line which you need experts to install. These special lines will be configured by an expert and you can start browsing. You need to start loading your phone for monthly browsing, weekly browsing etc. We have 3 plans; the N500 for 24 hour, this expires after 24 hours and you buy another N500 to recharge.
The second plan is the monthly plan which costs N2,500. This is for night browsing alone and it's for those people who don't have chance during the day. It starts from 10.00pm to 5am and it's
N2, 500 for the whole month.
Then we have the third one which costs N10, 000 for 24 hours daily, for ardent Internet users this could be good for the whole month.
Different types of phone and their advantages
For instance, we have Nokia 3110 Classic. You can also call it 3110C; it is the short form of the classic. We also have the Nokias 6230, 3230, you have N70, all the big Nokia phones can do the same like 3500, 6500, 6300 and 6230i. They all can stand out as a modem so also is Sony Ericson from K750 upward (K800, K900, W900i V10). In all, Nokia seems to be the best among all the phones listed, and the phone whose modem is the best among those that are listed is Nokia 6230. The reason why it is the best is because it has a manual configuration and you can even browse on it one time.
The reason why Nokia stopped producing it is because it is a manual phone. They prefer the advanced Nokia 3110C, which is an automatic Nokia phone to replace it. They want it to be simpler for their own people but in terms of understanding from our own Nigerian experience, the manual version is more preferable than the automatic because in manual you can switch to any network you like but in 3110c except we activate the line for you, you cannot switch to any other line. So that is the difference among the two phones.
Cost analysis profitability
This Nokia 3110 classic and the Nokia 6230 cost in the market is N15,000. With the data cable, it will cost you more than N15, 000. If you need to get the Pc Suite and cable, you can get it at the rate of N1,500.
If you want to sell and generate profit, you can get the cable and phone cheap and this depends on how many the person is buying. For instance, you can buy at the rate of N14,000 if you are buying 10 and if the person is buying 50 you can get it for at least N12,000, and if you sell the 50 you are already making a profit of up to N150,000 selling at between N15,000 and N17,000. You can make up to N150,000 by selling phones, when you start connecting people to the Internet which has become a hot business. The charge per installation is N7,500. Imagine connecting just 10 persons as this Christmas season is coming, when a lot of people will really need connection to access the Internet, because that is when they have the time. So, by the time people demand for this phone and need the configuration, the dealers are into business through.
So the phone is a money-making opportunity. Since the Nokia 6320 and Nokia 6320i are no more in production, the Tokunbo market has taken over and this phone is highly sought after. There are still opportunities to get it in large quantity at a price of N11, 000 and sell at N15, 000 from suppliers at the phone Accessory Shops.
